About the auditions
Auditions are held in November each year in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
Initial auditions will be held one at a time – you will need to perform a short monologue provided in advance by Brainstorm and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ unaccompanied. These auditions will be filmed for later reference.
You will be asked for information about your driving record, your availability for the coming season, some medical history and your employment history, experience and training.
You or your agent will be advised that day if you are required for callback and to make a time.
Callbacks are in groups of 4-5. You will be asked to demonstrate ability to move/dance etc depending on the role(s) we are considering you for. You will also be asked to improvise a variety of scenarios including some school-based situations. No accompaniment for singing and dancing please.
If you are shortlisted:
- Before an offer of employment is made you will be asked to provide a Service NSW, QLD Roads or VIC Roads print out of your driving record.
- We will require your permission to conduct a mandatory criminal record check for any history of violence or sexual based offences to provide you with a Working With Children Check number.
- Some individual schools may require us to supply them with your full name, date of birth and Working With Children Check number - this is a requirement of your ongoing employment with Brainstorm Productions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, it is a full time job, Monday to Friday, for the length of your contract.
Contracts vary from 2 to 3 school terms, i.e. approximately 24 to 35 weeks including holidays and rehearsals (see list of roles for specific dates).
Most contracts start in early or late January but some do start later in the year (see list of roles for specific dates).
Rehearsals are 3 weeks, Monday to Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm on the Far North Coast of NSW (near Byron Bay). Rehearsals are paid at award rates, and meal allowance and accommodation is provided. Most contracts also require you to do 2-5 days of pre-rehearsal work prior to these 3 weeks (e.g. a few days of training and choreography in your base city a few weeks prior to the rehearsals on the NSW Far North Coast). The pre-rehearsal dates will be arranged once the roles have been cast.
All shows are two-handers except for Cheap Thrills, which is a one-man show.
The sets are very minimal and fit in the back of a Toyota Rav 4. There are no 'tour managers' - actors are required to set up themselves at each school.
You do 1, 2 or 3 shows per day Monday to Friday in schools (maximum 15 shows per week but average about 12).
Current award rates for 2020 plus tax free living away from home allowance (LAHA) when away from your base city. If accommodation is provided by Brainstorm Productions (e.g. during rehearsals) a tax free meals and incidentals allowance is paid instead of the LAHA. Actors also receive holiday pay, leave loading and employer superannuation contributions.
We will consider you for all roles based in the city you reside in (Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane), unless you specifically ask us not to. If you wish to be considered for a role in another city, please include this in your application (e.g. if you are currently residing in Brisbane, but wish to be considered for a job in Sydney and/or Melbourne).
No, an automatic, air-conditioned company vehicle is provided for each team, including fuel and running costs.
You MUST have a current drivers licence and a good driving record (L-Plates are not acceptable). Before you are offered employment with Brainstorm Productions you will be asked to provide an RTA, VIC Roads or QLD Roads print-out of your driving record (depending on which state/s you have held a drivers licence in).
You must be physically fit and prepared to be away from home for at least part of the tour, for periods of 2-8 weeks at a time. However, some contracts require more time away from home than others - please see the list of roles for an overview of each contract.
Brainstorm Productions tours across NSW, VIC, QLD, ACT and SA. However, the coverage is divided up so one team is not expected to cover all states - most teams will visit 2 to 3 different states over the course of their contract.
You will be notified by phone or email by the 18th December 2019 if you have been cast or if you are unsuccessful. If you are represented by an agent, we will notify you through them.
